"Some cooks call these Puffins, others French Breakfast Muffins. I'm not sure if they are French in origin but they are simple and delicious. My family has loved them since the kids were little. They taste similar to old-fashioned cake donuts. These stir up quickly and are a tasty treat for a family breakfast/brunch or snack. "

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350F (180C or gas mark 4).

Step 2

Line a twelve cup muffin tin (average size) with muffin papers.

Step 3

In a medium mixing bowl combine the 1/3 cup butter, 1/2 cup sugar and the egg; mix well.

Step 4

Stir in the flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg.

Step 5

Add the milk and mix until all the ingredients are just moistened.

Step 6

Fill each muffin cup about 2/3 full.

Step 7

Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 8

While muffins are baking, in a bowl wide enough to accommodate the muffin, mix together 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon.

Step 9

Dip each muffin tip into the butter and then into the cinnamon-sugar mixture, turning to cover the muffin top with the sweet mixture.

Step 10

Wonderful served warm and great at room temperature (if any are left over). My children used to like them in their lunch boxes as a sweet treat without the gooey frosting. Enjoy!
