Step by Step Method
Step 1
In a shallow dish (or pie pan) whisk together the buttermilk and hot sauce. In another shallow dish whisk together the dry ingredients (flour, cornmeal, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and the peppers).
Step 2
In a large dutch oven pour oil to a depth of 4 inches; heat over medium high heat until a deep fry thermometer registers 350 degrees F.
Step 3
Dip okra in buttermilk mixture , allowing excess to drip off and then in flour mixture, shaking off excess.
Step 4
Fry in batches until golden brown (3-5 minutes) -- may need to adjust the heat to maintain 350 degrees.
Step 5
Remove okra from Dutch oven and let drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons salt. Serve with hot sauce, if desired.
