Step by Step Method
Step 1
In a bowl of an electric mixer cream together the butter and sugar and then whisk in the egg and buttermilk.
Step 2
In another bowl combine half of the flour with the rest of the dry ingredients (baking powder - lemon zest) and stir mixture into wet ingredients to make a dough, adding more flour until dough is no longer sticky.
Step 3
On a floured board knead dough until smother and then divide it into 2 pieces. Roll each piece out onto a floured board. Cut into 3 cm wide strips and then cut each strip diagonally into 6 pieces. Cut a slit in each piece and pull the top corner of the piece through the slit.
Step 4
In a deep fryer and large skillet heat the vegetable oil or fat (Crisco or Lard) to 180 degrees C and fry the bows, a few at a time for about 2 minutes on each side, turning once or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
