Sumac has a citrusy flavour. I have used lemon zest instead of sumac with great results. The natives used to use sumac for lemonade or sumac-ade. Hope this helps!

Sumac has notes of lemon, sour grape, and chili powder. But unless you know what it tastes like, I wouldn't go for blending it on your own. It would be better to go with only lemon zest for the sour note.

Hello,
Sumac is a widely used, essential spice in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. It's used in everything from dry rubs, marinades, and dressing. But its best use is sprinkled over food before serving.
