"Last summer, I came up with a Shrimp Boil recipe based on a couple others I have seen floating around. The biggest difference in my recipe and most others is that instead of going out to buy a bottle of Old Bay Seasoning, I created my own from ingredients already in my spice cabinet. Go easy on the nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves... maybe a scant 1/4 teaspoon to an 1/8 teaspoon amount. This recipe is best in a deep covered baker or Dutch oven type baking dish."

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Begin by making your seasoning from the celery salt, ground pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, dry mustard, ground nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. Mix in a small bowl and keep nearby.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, bring water to a boil and stir in 2 tablespoons of your prepared seasoning until combined well.

Step 3

In a covered baking dish, add the cubed potatoes, ears of corn (if these were purchased frozen, you'll want them thawed out), and the smoked sausage.

Step 4

Pour the seasoned water mixture over the top, add bay leaves, and toss a little to coat everything.

Step 5

Bake at 400 degrees for 40 minutes or until potatoes are tender.

Alternative one pot modification -- if you're using a Dutch oven, boil your water and seasonings in that; then add potatoes, corn, smoked sausage, and bay leaves. Then transfer to oven to bake as directed.

Step 6

Remove from oven and discard bay leaves. Add shrimp (again, if these were purchased frozen, have them already thawed) and butter. Toss to coat everything well.

Step 7

Continue baking for about 5-7 minutes.

Step 8

Remove from oven and sprinkle 2 tablespoons of prepared seasoning and lemon juice over the top and toss to coat.

Step 9

Serve immediately. Serve with any remaining seasoning for individuals to add as they wish.

  • When selecting the potatoes, choose small to medium sized potatoes for best results.
  • If using frozen shrimp, make sure to thaw them before adding them to the recipe.

  • Substitute smoked turkey sausage for the smoked sausage for a leaner option with less fat. The benefit of this substitution is that it will reduce the amount of fat in the dish while still providing a smoky flavor.
  • Substitute cauliflower for the potatoes for a lower carb option. The benefit of this substitution is that it will provide a similar texture to the potatoes while reducing the amount of carbohydrates in the dish.

Cajun Shrimp Boil Replace the celery salt, ground pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, dry mustard, ground nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves with 2 tablespoons of Cajun seasoning. Increase the amount of butter to 8 tablespoons and add 1 teaspoon of garlic powder. Increase the cooking time to 45 minutes and add 1/4 cup of white wine to the mixture before baking.

Cilantro-Lime Rice - This fragrant and flavorful rice dish is the perfect accompaniment to the spicy Shrimp Boil. The zesty lime and cilantro flavors will complement the spices in the shrimp boil without overpowering it.

Coleslaw: This cool and crunchy coleslaw is the perfect side to the Shrimp Boil. The creamy dressing and crunchy vegetables will provide a nice contrast to the spicy flavors of the shrimp boil. It's also a great way to add a hint of freshness to the meal.
