"A good starter turkey for beginning Thanksgiving cooks. You can add on fresh herbs and exotic spices if you like or you can just go plain & simple using just butter, salt, pepper and you're good to go. "

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat the turkey with butter (use your hands, it's fun) then season with salt and pepper and garlic powder

Step 2

ROASTING BAG METHOD: Place the turkey in the bag. With a knife or scissors, cut several small slits in the top of the bag, then seal. Place bag in a roasting pan so that the bird is breast-side up.

Step 3

ROASTING PAN METHOD: Place the turkey on a rack in the roasting pan. If you don't have a rack, no biggie, just put it right in the pan. An hour into cooking time, open the oven and spoon the juices in the pan over the bird. Repeat every 30 minutes until cooking is over. When you baste, check to be sure that the breast skin isn't getting too dark. If it is, place aluminum foil over the breasts.

Step 4

Bake for 3 hours, until internal temperature reaches 180 degrees F.

Step 5

Remove cooked turkey and allow to stand for 15 minutes. Carve and serve!
