"Trail mix isn’t a unique idea, but I often have ingredient issues here. Using ingredients I easily found at my local bargain grocery store, I put this together as part of a food gift Christmas basket for DH's family. I had saved clear glass bottles (A cognac bottle & heart-shaped limoncello bottle we bought in Italy are shown in the pic). I filled them w/trail mix & put them in our freezer for the holidays. Some bottles even came in boxes & were gift-wrapped. They are a good personalized gift for teachers, house/yard help, the mailman, etc. You can easily make 1/2 or 1/3 of this recipe or more like I did AND it makes a great project to do w/your kids. :-)"

Step by Step Method

Step 1

Combine all ingredients. Freeze in airtight containers until ready to use.

Step 2

NOTE #1: I needed an average of 3 cups trail mix for 5 bottled gifts, so I picked 10 items X 1 1/2 cups = 15 cups. I wanted to use red cinnamon candies for the red color & tasty flavor, but I cannot buy them here. Any cereal favorite can be used if it’s “sturdy” enough to hold up in the mix (like Chex does). There are really no rules for this except have fun!

Step 3

NOTE #2: Although the net yield was 15 cups for 5 gifts, I considered a generous serving to be 1/2 cup - Hence the 30 servings listed.

Step 4

NOTE #3: It made no sense to do this & not make a supply for us, so I made 1 & 1/2 times the recipe & froze the excess in a container w/a snap-on lid. Whenever we had unexpected guests during the holidays or I needed to have a small token gift for a hostess, I relied on our extra supply.

Tips

  • Only the gift containers you select, but can make & store ahead of that.

I made this up yesterday for my Christmas party on Saturday. This is one of the gifts included in the door prize at my party. Love this mix, and so will the lucky winner!

Put in everything but I used chex mix for the cereal. I put them in little mason jars and decorated the tops and put a bow around the cap. So cute and everyone will love em!
